FAO-UNEP call for bold move to restore world’s ecosystems

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, has warned that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – also known as the 2030 Agenda – will not be achieved without large-scale restoration of degraded terrestrial, freshwater & marine ecosystems. He was speaking at a joint “townhall meeting” that brought together staff from FAO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

“We are all part of the solution and you can count on the food and agriculture sector to play its part,” FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said in a panel discussion with the heads of other UN agencies aimed at “reimagining of the human relationship to nature as a symbiotic one."

The region of Europe and Central Asia is an economic and agricultural powerhouse that boasts diverse cultures, agri-food systems and climatic zones, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said today. This diversity, he added, provides opportunities to share experience and good practices within the region and beyond, but to untap this potential the region needs more investment and innovation.
