The first edition of FAO's Panorama of Rural Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean warns of a historical reversal in the struggle to improve rural welfare in the region. Rural poverty grew by two million people between 2014 and 2016, reaching a total of 59 million.
“We (FAO and the Holy See) convey a joint message urging an end to the violation of human rights within the fishing sector, and we call for an end to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing,” FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva said at an event celebrating World Fisheries Day.
